9 Tips for Enjoying Your Backyard in the Winter
When winter rolls in, many of us retreat indoors and forget about our backyards entirely. However, with a little planning and the right mindset, your outdoor space can be just as enjoyable in winter as it is in summer. From cozy gatherings to peaceful solo moments, here are nine simple ways to make the most of your backyard in the colder months.
1. Create a Cozy Seating Area
Add weather-resistant chairs, outdoor cushions, and plenty of blankets. Even in colder temperatures, having a comfortable place to sit makes stepping outside far more inviting.
2. Add Warmth with a Fire Feature
A fire pit, chiminea, or outdoor fireplace instantly transforms your backyard into a winter retreat. It provides warmth, ambience, and a natural gathering spot for friends and family.
Wood burning fire pits
Similar to a campfire, wood-burning fire pits offer the same level of warmth and smoky ambiance in a contained space. Most wood-burning fire pits are made with steel and come in a variety of sizes. The bigger the pit (or bowl), the bigger your fire will be, which is something to bear in mind compared to the space you’re working with. The fire pit is also equipped with legs, offering a certain safety level as it keeps them off the ground and away from any patio flooring or furniture.
Propane fire pits
Avoid building a fire with wood by investing in a propane fire pit. These little beauties are larger than a wood-burning fire pit and are luxe in their appearance. The flame that ignites from a propane fire pit is pretty impressive, too. Most propane fire pits accommodate a 20-pound propane tank that can be purchased at many essential-goods stores.
Natural gas fire pits
A natural gas fire pit is the largest of the three options we’ve highlighted, and wow, are they worth it! This fire pit requires a permanent connection to a natural gas line, eliminating your risk of running out of gas. It’s important to keep in mind that a gas fire pit can’t be moved once you decide on where to place it due to the gas hookup. But the good news is that they are the least expensive to operate and easiest to maintain.
3. Light It Up
Shorter days don’t mean your backyard has to disappear after sunset. String lights, lanterns, or solar path lights add warmth and visibility while making the space feel magical at night.
- Heat lamps to provide both illumination and warmth during the coldest nights
- Holiday lights that can be kept up long past Santa coming down the chimney
- Fairy lights as accent pieces on small outdoor decor, trees, and bushes
4. Embrace Winter Activities
Turn your backyard into a mini winter playground. Build a snowman, create a small skating area, or set up a snowshoe or toboggan zone if space allows.
5. Make It Pet-Friendly
Winter walks don’t always cut it for pets. Keep a clear path for them to explore, play, and burn off energy while you enjoy some fresh air too.
6. Bring the Comforts of Indoors Outside
Blankets and throw pillows are excellent options to not only dress up your space, but they instantly create a sense of warmth and security. Texture and material play a big role in bringing this illusion to life, so look for items with faux fur, corduroy, fleece, and velour. Remember also to store accessories indoors when you’ve finished using them or choose to invest in weather-resistant options instead.
7. Protect and Showcase Winter Plants
Evergreens, winter berries, and ornamental grasses add life and colour even in colder months. Keep planters protected and brush heavy snow off branches to maintain their shape.
8. Keep Paths Safe and Accessible
Shovel regularly and use eco-friendly ice melt to keep walkways safe. A clear, slip-free path makes spontaneous backyard moments much more likely.
9. Slow Down and Enjoy the Quiet
Winter brings a unique stillness you won’t find any other time of year. Step outside, take a deep breath, and enjoy the calm, whether it’s falling snow, crisp air, or a peaceful evening by the fire.
Winter doesn’t have to put your backyard on pause. With a few thoughtful touches, it can become a cozy extension of your home—one that helps you embrace the season instead of waiting it out
